Lagrein as a varietal wine is slowly growing close to my heart. The first time it showed up Orfila Vineyards I was quite surprised by its natural acidity. The original 2016 Orfila Lagrein had a highly aggressive astringent finish could be considered a bit off-putting when merely having it with a tasting flight, but with pork chops or a piece of salty hard cheese, it can be a delight. In a unique twist, Orfila has also released a second vintage nicknamed 'Left Out,' as it was the second batch of grapes from the same vineyard in the same year. Still a little bright and acidic but quite a bit smoother and side by side you can see how different production styles can be used to handle the high tannic structure of this relatively unknown varietal.
